Draper Hill — working the gradientTwo excavators, including mine, preparing level working pads along the steep pipeline alignment.Matthew Cassell · Personal project archive.

Cairns Regional Council’s new supply combines a Mulgrave River intake, treatment facilities and a distribution network [1]. I worked on sections of this larger system with Koppens Construction, then through GNM contracting to John Holland. Council’s current programme targets operation in early 2027, following construction that began in 2024 [1].

01

Distribution pipelines & final trim

I operated a 22-tonne Hitachi excavator for pipeline installation and a 12-tonne excavator for finishing. My work included trench excavation, pipe-laying support, trench profiling, controlled backfilling, final trim and ground reinstatement to the drawings and required levels.

02

Draper Hill — steep terrain

I carried out hillside pipeline trenching, bulkhead excavations, reinforcement-cage positioning, installation support and controlled backfilling. Working in constrained positions required careful machine placement, control of excavation profiles and attention to ground and trench stability.

03

What the published gradient means

Council reports local slopes up to 45%, more than 250 metres of hillside pipe and approximately 80 metres of climb to the 8 ML reservoir [3]. A 45% gradient is about 24.2° (arctan 0.45); it is a published project figure, rather than a measurement of every position where I operated.

04

One project, complementary skills

I worked across bulk excavation, precise pipe preparation and detailed finishing. Required levels depend on the element being built: trench invert and formation during installation, and finished ground level during reinstatement. My work supported individual sections, rather than installation of the entire network.
